It is possible to recover from bankruptcy. And, as the NFL season gets started, what better place to look for examples than professional football players?
That's just what Yahoo! Sports did in a recent column. Writer Tamara McRill covered the bankruptcies of three NFL stars: quarterback Mark Brunell, offensive lineman Duval Love and former quarterback Marlin Briscoe. All three of these players have since recovered from their financial woes.
It's a lesson that Eagles star quarterback Michael Vick is teaching, too. In 2008, Vick filed for bankruptcy protection after filing $20.3 million in debt. Today, he just finished signing a six-year, $100 million contract.
Vick's not alone in turning around his life after bankruptcy. Briscoe, for instance, fell victim to an addiction to crack cocaine that left him homeless and in prison. Briscoe has since changed his life. He started a children's football camp and became the director of the Boys and Girls Club in Long Beach, Calif.
Brunell filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010 thanks to failed real estate investments and restaurant businesses. He is now president of a company that runs football camps and is the back-up quarterback for the Jets. His financial woes are almost behind him.
These tales prove that it is possible to turn your finances around after filing for bankruptcy protection. Fort Lauderdale bankruptcy attorneys will tell you that you don't have to be rich, either, to do so.
Recovering from bankruptcy is not difficult, once you start with a clean slate. It can be done. Just ask the stars of the NFL.
